Yamaha and Lola Strengthen Collaboration Beyond 2027
Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. and Lola Cars Ltd have announced the extension of their technical partnership for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. Building on their 2024 agreement, the two companies will continue collaborating into the “GEN4” era, advancing the development and supply of high-performance electric powertrains for the world’s premier all-electric racing series.
The move reflects Yamaha’s commitment to refining cutting-edge electric technologies and maintaining competitive standards at the highest level of motorsport innovation.
A Partnership Built on Innovation and Sustainability
The partnership initially began in March 2024, with Yamaha teaming up with Lola — a historic British racing car manufacturer — to supply electric powertrains for the third-generation “GEN3EVO” Formula E machines. These vehicles are raced under the “Lola Yamaha ABT Formula E Team” banner, operated in collaboration with German-based outfit ABT.
Lola, known for its legacy across numerous international racing competitions, focuses heavily on promoting sustainable motorsports. With Yamaha’s expertise in electric systems, the partnership has already brought competitive energy management and performance innovations to the grid.
Preparing for the Demands of the Formula E GEN4 Era
From Season 13 (2026–2027), Formula E will usher in the GEN4 regulations, featuring significant technical advancements. Power output will rise to 600 kW, while regenerative braking capacity will increase to an impressive 700 kW. These changes require even greater strides in energy efficiency, lightweight construction, and thermal management — areas Yamaha and Lola aim to master through their continued collaboration.
Through this ongoing partnership, Yamaha will pursue new benchmarks in power density, energy regeneration, and overall performance, reaffirming its role as a leader in sustainable technology development.
Aligning with Yamaha’s Broader Environmental Goals
This partnership is also integral to Yamaha’s long-term environmental strategy. The company has set a corporate target to achieve carbon neutrality across Scope 3 emissions — including the use of sold products — by 2050. In line with its “Technology Vision,” Yamaha is strengthening its core competencies in energy management, making Formula E an ideal proving ground for future road and racing applications.
Yamaha’s participation in Formula E goes beyond competition; it represents a bold step toward a cleaner, high-performance future in both motorsports and everyday mobility.
