Verstappen Outpaces McLarens to Win Action-Packed Imola Grand Prix
Max Verstappen secured his second win of the season with a commanding performance at the F1 2025 Emilia-Romagna GP, edging out Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri after a race filled with bold overtakes, pit strategy gambles, and dramatic incidents at Imola. The victory also marked Red Bull’s 400th Grand Prix appearance, and Verstappen’s fourth consecutive win at the historic circuit.
Lightning Start and Tactical Brilliance from the World Champion
Despite starting from second on the grid, Verstappen immediately pounced on polesitter Piastri with a sensational move into the Tamburello chicane on the opening lap. From there, the Dutchman managed the pace superbly, initially extending his lead while Piastri and others opted for early pit stops.
A Virtual Safety Car (VSC) on Lap 29, triggered by Esteban Ocon’s stoppage, played into Verstappen’s hands, allowing him to pit and rejoin with a significant 20-second advantage over Norris. A later full Safety Car, caused by Kimi Antonelli’s Mercedes retirement on Lap 46, reset the field and gave McLaren a final opportunity to challenge.
McLaren Strategy Under the Spotlight
At the Safety Car restart, Piastri remained out on older tyres while Norris pitted for fresh hards. Once racing resumed, Norris quickly closed in and overtook his teammate, securing second place. Despite the tyre disadvantage, Piastri held on to finish third and retain the lead in the Drivers’ Championship with 146 points.
Hamilton’s Strong Recovery and Ferrari’s Mixed Day
Lewis Hamilton delivered a spirited drive to claim fourth in his first race at Imola as a Ferrari driver, overtaking George Russell and later passing both Leclerc and Albon to secure valuable points. Charles Leclerc, after starting 11th, managed to climb to sixth, but was ultimately beaten by Alex Albon, who claimed a season-best P5 for Williams following a thrilling late-race duel.
Russell finished seventh for Mercedes, with Carlos Sainz bringing home more points for Williams in eighth. Rookie Isack Hadjar continued to impress, finishing ninth for Racing Bulls, while Yuki Tsunoda completed the top 10—capping off a strong recovery after his Qualifying crash.
Midfield Battles, Late Drama, and DNFs
Further down the order, Fernando Alonso narrowly missed out on points in P11 after Aston Martin’s performance faded. Nico Hulkenberg, Pierre Gasly, and Liam Lawson followed, while Franco Colapinto completed his first race back with Alpine in 16th. Ollie Bearman and Gabriel Bortoleto brought up the rear. The only retirees were Antonelli and Ocon, both stopping due to mechanical issues.
