Lando Norris Triumphs at Austrian GP After Intense McLaren Duel with Piastri
Lando Norris clinched a dramatic victory at the Formula 1 2025 Austrian GP, edging out McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri in a tense race-long battle that saw both drivers push each other to the limits. The win marks Norris’ third of the season and a critical result in the championship fight as Max Verstappen was eliminated on Lap 1 following a crash with Kimi Antonelli.
Early Drama Sees Verstappen and Antonelli Retire
The race started with fireworks even before the lights went out, as Carlos Sainz’s Williams failed to launch from the grid due to a gearbox issue, delaying the start. Once underway, the tension reached new heights at Turn 3 where Antonelli locked up and collided with Verstappen, ending the race for both and prompting an early Safety Car.
McLaren vs. McLaren: Norris and Piastri Set the Pace
From the very start, it was clear that the fight for the win would be an intra-team affair. Norris led off the line from pole, but Piastri remained glued to his rear wing. The two swapped positions multiple times, including a particularly close moment at Turn 4 where Piastri locked up and nearly rear-ended Norris. Strategic tyre calls and pit stops added another layer of complexity, with Piastri attempting to undercut Norris by extending his first stint.
Despite his efforts and faster pace at certain stages, Piastri was hampered by traffic and a near-collision with backmarker Franco Colapinto in the final laps. Norris managed his tyres and the gap smartly, ultimately crossing the line 3.5 seconds ahead of his teammate.
Ferrari, Mercedes, and Kick Sauber Deliver Strong Performances
Behind the leading duo, Charles Leclerc secured a solid podium in third, holding off Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, who finished fourth. George Russell came home fifth for Mercedes, recovering from a poor qualifying.
Rookie Liam Lawson impressed again with a sixth-place finish, while Fernando Alonso out-dueled Gabriel Bortoleto for seventh. The Brazilian rookie, however, earned his first-ever F1 points in eighth for Kick Sauber, who also celebrated a double-points finish thanks to Nico Hulkenberg in ninth. Esteban Ocon rounded out the top 10 for Haas.
Penalties and Retirements: Chaos for Others
The Austrian GP race was far from clean for the rest of the grid. Yuki Tsunoda received a 10-second penalty for spinning Colapinto, while the latter also received a 5-second penalty for an unsafe return to track. Both finished at the back.
Williams endured a nightmare weekend as Alex Albon retired with a mechanical failure, and Carlos Sainz didn’t even take the start. Mercedes’ Antonelli received a three-place grid penalty for the next race due to his collision with Verstappen.
