Alpine Alpenglow Hy6 Debuts with Brand’s First V6 Hydrogen Engine, Marking a New Era in Sustainable Motorsport
Alpine has taken a bold leap into the future of sustainable high-performance driving with the debut of the Alpenglow Hy6, the latest evolution of its hydrogen-powered concept car. Introduced at EICMA 2022 as a vision for sustainable sports cars, the Alpenglow returns with a brand-new 3.5-litre V6 hydrogen engine and a host of technological and aerodynamic enhancements.
A Powerful Hydrogen V6 Engine for the Future
At the heart of the Alpenglow Hy6 is Alpine’s first-ever hydrogen-powered 3.5-litre V6 engine, producing an impressive 740 bhp (544 kW) and 770 Nm of torque at 5,000 rpm. With a redline of 9,000 rpm and twin turbochargers, this engine more than doubles the output of its 4-cylinder predecessor.
Utilizing direct hydrogen injection and water injection for lower emissions, the engine is built with Formula 1-grade development methods. Hydrogen is stored in three high-pressure 700-bar composite tanks embedded within ventilated sidepods. Alpine is also exploring liquid hydrogen options for enhanced integration and faster refueling.
Design That Reflects Innovation and Speed
The Alpenglow Hy6’s design is as futuristic as its powertrain. The Specular Blue carbon fiber bodywork is more aerodynamic and lighter than before, with design details like:
- Transparent engine bay showcasing the hydrogen power unit
- NACA ducts in the rear window for advanced cooling
- A raised, aggressive rear wing with Inconel exhausts emitting water vapor
Michelin-designed wheels and racing tires underline the vehicle’s performance intent.
A Futuristic Cockpit Experience
Inside, the Alpenglow Hy6 embraces a track-focused, sci-fi aesthetic. Highlights include:
- Elytra-style doors for dramatic entry
- Metallic and blue light-reactive upholstery
- Magenta dashboard crossbar with an aircraft wing-inspired shape
- Racing steering wheel with integrated mini-camera mounts
Materials like carbon fiber, aluminum, and Alcantara underscore its blend of luxury and performance.
Alpine’s Commitment to Hydrogen-Powered Racing
With hydrogen-powered cars poised to compete at Le Mans by 2028, Alpine is racing ahead in hydrogen motorsport innovation. The Alpenglow Hy6 is not just a concept—it is a statement of intent. By mimicking the excitement of traditional race cars while minimizing carbon emissions, Alpine proves that hydrogen combustion engines can deliver both performance and sustainability.
